The kindness of friends (Tuesday)

There's nothing like getting sick in a country that is not your own and whose language you don't speak to make you feel helpless and alone.

And there's nothing like friends who care and help to make you feel better.

Yesterday, as Elba and I were working on a course outline for the new Software Engineering career, I felt myself sinking back into the "ick" of the weekend.  By the time I got home, my throat was scratchy and I ached all over.  After talking with David, I headed to bed.

In the night, I woke up covered with sweat and burning up.  I was loopy too, so I went into the bathroom where I swabbed myself down with cool water and staggered back to bed.

This morning, it was clear that I couldn't go to my Spanish lessons.  After having fever dreams for a while, I got up to let my teacher know, and then went back to bed.  I also used WhatsApp to connect with friends from UTP to let them know what's up.

Lydia was on her way to work and she came by to pick me up, hoping to take me to the doctor on campus.  Unfortunately that doctor left and there's no replacement yet.  So I sat in my office for a while and then Lydia returned to take me to the clinic up the street from me.

There, I was seen promptly by a bi-lingual doctor who took a look at me, prescribed some meds and sent me on my way with instructions to sleep this afternoon - hardly a challenge given how I'm feeling.

So now I'm back in my apartment, headed for a nap with the mending process started.

And Geralis and Elba and the head of the language program and Martha from church and so many others in the office... all of them offered help, made suggestions, and provided moral support which also really helped me feel connected.  Thank you to all of you!

And now, good night!
